Which Rimworld mods are the best? Rimworld is a colony management game with a straightforward premise: you must ensure the survival of a motley crew of colonists, each with their own set of randomly generated skills, backstories, and quirks.
I guess it depends on the AI storyteller setup. Your experience could range from “wholesome farming sim” to “relentless cascade of disaster.” There are numerous best Rimworld mods available to add bonus features and quality of life improvements to your playthroughs.
Some are minor tweaks that allow you to better organize your colony or become more efficient, while others introduce entirely new mechanics such as hygiene and children, and a few totally change the game by introducing magic or outer space.
We recommend starting with a mod-free experience and gradually adding mods once you’ve completed a couple of vanilla Rimworld colonies and emotionally recovered from the disturbing stories that have emerged from your adventures.
For example, when one of your ailing colonists died and your doctor immediately fed the corpse to the other patient, or when everybody got food poisoning on a road trip and the only upright coloniser, who had sworn never to use violence, was trampled to death by a mad squirrel.

How to install Rimworld mods in 2021?
The large majority of Rimworld mods are available through the Steam Workshop and can be added to your game with the click of a button. Several of the more complex mods, on the other hand, require you to install Harmony and, on occasion, Hugslib, which are both libraries that provide features for your mods.
Your mods must be loaded in a specific order, and library mods must pack before the core game itself, but there is an auto-sort option in the best Rimworld mods 1.1 update to shuffle them into the correct order. Some of these mods will continue playing as it was before saving, but the majority will advise you to create a new file.
At the time of this writing, each mod on the list should work with the most recent 1.3 update. Keep an eye out for mods that also require the Royalty or Philosophy expansion.
Rimworld Multiplayer
If you want to try out best Rimworld mods with some friends, this is a great place to start. It is fully compatible with the most recent patch as well as the Royalty expansion, and it can also be used with other mods. If you want to learn more about how this one works, we’ve put together a more comprehensive Reddit RimWorld multiplayer guide.
Hospitality
One of our major complaints about earlier game modes was that visitors served no purpose. They’d wander into your map, hang out for a while (usually in front of the turrets or outside in the rain), and then leave. Traders came and went, but they were few and far between.
Hospitality corrects this by allowing you to build guest rooms, tell guests where they can and cannot go, mark items in an area as buyable, and improve (or harm) your relationship with a faction by getting someone dote on them. It adds a lot of options, such as opening a hotel and serving colony-brewed beer, or running a nice human trafficking ring.
EdB Prepare Carefully
Have you ever spent far too much time refreshing your band of beginning oddos, looking for someone who knows not to hold a knife by the pointy end, or who can bandage someone without threatening to burn your colony down? EdB Prepare Carefully allows you to customise your initial colonists and items to create your ideal start – there’s also an optional points cap to keep you from creating colonists who are unfairly talented.
Colony Manager
Fluffy’s Colony Manager lets you appoint a colony manager who will assign jobs to colonists automatically in order to maintain the colony overflowing with wood and meat, as well as manage your livestock. This means you won’t have to worry about running out of supplies because they’ll be replenished as quickly as possible. To use this mod, you’ll need to start a new save because it adds a new work form to the game.
Realistic Rooms
Given that they’re trying to survive a crash landing rather than booking an AirBnB, colonists have some pretty unrealistic expectations for the size of their rooms. Realistic Rooms makes it easier to create compressed bases without disturbing your ungrateful pawns by bringing required room sizes closer to reality. It’s also compatible with save games.
Bubbles of interaction
Unless you’re constantly checking the social log, your colonists are continually saying strange and fascinating things to one another, which you’ll most likely miss. These quips and questions will appear over your colonists when they speak, thanks to Jaxe’s Interaction Bubbles, so you’ll never miss an interaction again. It is possible to add or remove it at any time without affecting your save files.
Common Sense
Your colonists aren’t always so bright. They won’t rush to get all the ingredients they need, or cook in a filthy kitchen, but with Common Sense, their actions are a little more, well, sensible. It’s perfectly safe to install or uninstall in the middle of a game.
Light on the Wall
It’s a light that hangs from the ceiling. A Wall Light is a sleek and unobtrusive light that can be placed anywhere on a wall, eliminating the need for unsightly lamps that take up space. You can also look into “Coloured Lights,” which will allow you to turn your colony into a gaudy nightclub.
Grim Reality
Even as your colonists fight with their own survival on the Rim, their moods and opinions radically plummet if they get rained on while hungry, or if they’ve just been rejected romantic interest by the same person for the fifteenth time in a row in vanilla Rimworld.
Your colonists will still verbally abuse them because their face is a little wonky, even if that super intelligent doctor saved their lives and cooked them a good dinner of Ibex meat and rice. Grim Reality instills a sense of realism in your finicky little pawns, reducing the impact of minor flaws while amplifying the impact of truly horrific events.
Dubs Bad Hygiene
Toilets are the one thing missing from your Rimworld adventure. Dubs Bad Hygiene is a game that includes a hygiene system. To keep your colonists clean and waste-free, you’ll need to build sewage and plumbing infrastructure. Irrigation canals, hot tubs, and heating systems are also included in the mod. It can be added to an existing save, but once added, it is difficult to remove.
Children, School and Learning
Dylan’s Children, School, and Learning mod adds pregnancy and children to the game, though they thankfully appear as fully formed teenagers, which we strongly advise you to avoid visualizing in your head. The kids are immediately useful, which is a plus. You can construct blackboards and school tables for your colonists to teach children skills, but they can only learn for a year before becoming adults.
Save Our Ship 2
The goal of Vanilla Rimworld is to build a ship and get it off the planet, but Save Our Ship significantly expands the mid to late game by allowing you to pilot your own ship. You can load colonists and items onto your ship and travel to distant worlds, leaving your colonies in the hands of allied factions – but you can always return.
While orbiting a planet, you’ll come across other ships, some of which are friendlier than others. By making ‘crittersleep’ capsules, you can even bring your pets with you.
Vanilla Expansion
The Vanilla Expanded modpack is a massive collection of mods that expands the game in a variety of new but well-balanced ways. They’ll all work together seamlessly because they’re all made by the same team, and they’ll add a tonne of new content, including texture mods, more furniture, expanded heavy armour and weapons, so many animals, and they’ll manage to improve cooking, fishing, plants, factions, and books.
A Magical Rimworld
A best Rimworld mods of Magic completely revamps combat by introducing 12 magic classes and six fighter classes, each with their own set of abilities and game trees. There’s also a slew of new apparel and equipment options, as well as a slew of new events. While messing around with magic is a lot of fun, some users have complained that it’s a little too powerful – though you can customize some of the settings in-game to add a little more challenge.
Extended Combat
Combat Extended rebalances armour and shields, injuries, melee and projectile fighting, and other aspects of Rimworld’s combat system. A ballistic model has taken the place of the frustrating percentage-based shooting system. It’s a significant improvement in every way, with the exception that it necessitates a new save, cannot be removed from saves, and interferes with other mods.
We’ve compiled a list of the best Rimworld mods we’ve found, so load up your digital plate with them all at once and try to figure out why your game won’t load. We suggest trying a few at a time, as they are almost certainly incompatible with each other.
